Mark is a heat pump installer in Rotherham and across South Yorkshire, working from Bessacarr at the Doncaster end of the M18. Installs are certified under Ample's MCS certification, so most Rotherham homes get the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant taken off the price. What kind of house is a Rotherham heat pump going into?
Usually a semi. The Valuation Office Agency's 2025 count of homes puts 51,660 of Rotherham's 122,350 homes in the semi-detached column, and 40,120 of those are three-bedroom semis. That is roughly one home in three across the whole borough. In the 2021 Census, 49% of Rotherham households lived in a semi, a higher share than in Doncaster, Barnsley or Sheffield.
The same count dates them. Close to 45% of Rotherham's homes were built between 1945 and 1982, and the biggest single period on the list is 1965 to 1972. Bungalows make up about 12% of homes. Only around 13% were built before 1919.
That matters for a heat pump because the design starts from how fast the house loses heat. The Energy Saving Trust's rule of thumb is that a house built after the 1920s probably has cavity walls, so most Rotherham homes start with walls that can be insulated, or already have been. Homes in that pre-1919 13% are more likely to have solid walls, which lose heat faster and change the sums.
None of that sizes a heat pump on its own. Two three-bed semis on the same street can need different systems once loft insulation, windows, extensions and radiator sizes are counted. That is why nothing is chosen until Mark has scanned the house with LiDAR and worked out the heat loss room by room, as set out on the heat pumps page.

Which heat pump grant will a Rotherham home get?
Almost always £7,500. The 2021 Census found 82.8% of Rotherham households heated by mains gas alone, and a gas home gets the standard Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant towards an air source heat pump.
The higher £9,000 grant is for homes off the gas grid that are replacing oil or LPG, with applications properly made by 31 March 2027. In Rotherham that is a small group: the Census counted 519 households on oil alone and 557 on tank or bottled gas alone, under 1% of the borough between them. Off the gas grid has a strict meaning for the grant, and a capped meter does not count, so read the rules for the £9,000 grant before planning around it. The full table for every kind of home is on the heat pump grants page.
Rent from the council or a housing association?
Social housing cannot get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and in Rotherham that rules out about one household in five: 20.7% rented from the council or a housing association at the 2021 Census. If you bought your home under Right to Buy, it is a different story. Ofgem's guidance says a Right to Buy home can qualify once it is privately owned, as long as it meets the other rules.
Worth having to hand when Mark visits
Your EPC number, if the house has a valid certificate. It is no longer required for the grant, but where one exists it goes on the application.
A recent gas, oil, LPG or electricity bill. Without a valid EPC, Ofgem accepts bills and photos of the current heating as evidence instead.
Whether there is a gas meter at the house, even a capped one. For oil and LPG homes, this decides between £7,500 and £9,000.
A thought about where a hot water cylinder could go. Heat pump systems usually include one. In Mark's installs they have gone in airing cupboards, utility rooms, under the stairs and in lofts.
Photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence. Ofgem may ask the owner for identity documents once the grant application is made.
Getting a heat pump installer in Rotherham out to your house
The online estimate comes first. It starts from your address and shows which grant applies, and Mark follows up with a written estimate before anyone visits. If it is worth going further, Mark comes out to survey the house, and the proposal that follows is built from that survey. Ample handles the grant application, the notice to the electricity network operator and the finance options.
Does Mark cover the whole Rotherham borough, or just the town?
The whole borough. Mark works across South Yorkshire, so that takes in Wath upon Dearne, Swinton, Rawmarsh, Maltby, Dinnington and the villages as well as Rotherham itself.
My house has electric storage heaters. Which grant would I get?
£7,500 for an air source heat pump. Replacing electric heating qualifies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, but the £9,000 rate is only for homes replacing oil or LPG. The 2021 Census counted 3,738 Rotherham households heated by electricity alone.
I let out a house in Rotherham. Can I get the grant as a landlord?
Yes. The grant is for the owner of the property, and that includes private landlords. Ofgem asks landlords to make sure their tenants know about the installation before it goes ahead.
I have already had free insulation through a council or energy company scheme. Can I still get the heat pump grant?
Yes. GOV.UK says you are still eligible if you have already had funding to make your home more energy efficient. What usually rules a home out is earlier public funding for low-carbon heating at the same address.
